After a gap of 28 years since the last survey of India’s hydropower potential was completed during 1978-1987, the Indian government plans a comprehensive basin-wise study to garner latest data for best utilization of its hydro power resources. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India’s top-most power-sector planning body is spearheading this exercise.

With this the project moves to advance phase of construction.
The Eight member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) signed a framework agreement on co-operation in power sector to ensure electricity trading through seamless grid connectivity. An interconnected grid planned under the agreement will allow power to be traded as any other commodity to meet the electricity demand in the region. India already has power grid links with Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh, and has plans to develop transmission links with Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
